• What is alcohol abuse? Alcohol abuse is a health issue. It is characterized by a maladaptive pattern of drinking alcohol that results in negative work, medical, legal, educational, and/or social effects on a person's life. The individual who abuses this substance tends to continue to use it despite such consequences.
• Drinking alcohol within the recommended guidelines for moderate drinking may increase blood pressure more than previously thought.
• A new report states that there is a strong relationship between alcohol use among youth and fighting, stealing, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, skipping school, feeling depressed, and deliberately trying to hurt or kill themselves.
• The prevalence of current drinking among persons aged 21 to 25 also declined significantly from 70% in 1985 to 56% in 1991, but increased to 60% by 1999.
