  • Non-alcoholic members of an alcoholic's family will use 10 times as much sick leave as an individual from a family where alcohol is not a problem. An estimated 80% of these family members report their ability to perform work is impaired as a result of living with an alcohol abuser.

  • A recent survey 41% of physicians placed the threshold for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome at one to three drinks per day while 38% placed the threshold at one or fewer drinks per day. Both contradict the Surgeon General's advice that women should not consume any alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects.
  • Heavy drinking can cause liver cirrhosis, immune system problems, and brain damage; it also increases the risk for certain cancers such as liver, esophagus and the throat.
