- In the past three years, the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento saw a 30 percent increase in children between 12 and 17 checking into the ER with injuries from binge drinking, with higher blood alcohol levels than in the past.
- The reason that some individuals can drink heavily and not experience a blackout is due to biological variability; different people have different sensitivities to the effects of drinking alcohol.
- Social drinkers who binge can get irregular heartbeats from their alcohol use.
- Emergency room doctors are now being trained on screening patients that are coming in for alcohol abuse problems; this creates an opportunity for these physicians to be actively involved in helping to reduce the growing rate of alcoholism within the community.
